The new curtailment rule and computing next to generation assets

Curtailment for energy reasons, previously allocated separately between wind and solar plants, has a new rule. Thiago Costa, founder of AeroGrid AI, starts from ANEEL's transmission auctions to propose computing co-located with constrained assets, with zero capex for the asset manager and monetisation of idle energy, according to the company.

ANEEL Normative Resolution 1,170/2026, of 9 October, brings wind, solar and run-of-river hydroelectric plants together in the allocation. In self-generation with generation and consumption at the same connection point, curtailment is as a rule limited to the surplus over local consumption.

This provides a basis for load installed next to the plant, provided the arrangement is self-generation. The timetable is staggered: a transitional regime in 90 days, shadow operation in 180 days and the full model after 18 months.

Shadow operation is the window to measure how much of the curtailed energy a local load would recover. With the rule published, the decision now has a timetable.
