Membraneless electrolysers return to the debate
Membraneless electrolysers are back in the debate in Brazilian hydrogen engineering. In a post by Marcelo Bezerra, Evo Hydrogen and Hidrox present resonant electrolysis in a tubular structure, with gas separation through physical configuration and electronic control per module. This is the company's description, not a test result.
The long-term yardstick already exists. The United States Department of Energy records, for alkaline electrolysis, a stack lifetime of 60,000 hours in 2022 and a target of 80,000 hours for 2026, with degradation falling from 0.17% to 0.13% per thousand hours.
Without a membrane, maintenance no longer depends on that component. Attention shifts to gas separation: a summary from the 2019 AIChE annual meeting identifies hydrogen and oxygen crossover between electrodes as the purity challenge of this architecture.
For fleets and operators, the useful step is to measure hours, voltage decay and purity in independent testing. New technology gains ground on the same yardstick as established ones. And it may show its advantage precisely there.
