Meta's Hyperion and the energy bill of data centres
The energy bill of AI data centres is beginning to be compared with that of entire cities. In a Visual Capitalist infographic reposted by Leonel Rodrigues, Hyperion, planned by Meta, appears with demand equivalent to 43.8 TWh per year, close to the 46.9 TWh attributed to New York.
The supply for this campus already has an address. On 20 August 2025, the Louisiana Public Service Commission approved three Entergy combined-cycle gas plants totalling 2.26 GW, two scheduled for 2028 and the third for the end of 2029, plus a USD 1.2 billion 500 kV line, according to Data Center Dynamics. Meta will pay the plants' annual revenue for 15 years.
The arrangement ties a single customer to a single supplier and to the generation built for it. This gives predictability to the utility and a timeline to the data centre, but concentrates the supply of a multi-billion asset in new plants and a new line.
For generation developers, the signal is clear: AI load contracts dedicated, long-term capacity. The contract goes to whoever delivers firm energy within the construction schedule.
