PXP Energy and the search for natural hydrogen in the Philippines
After years focused on oil and gas, PXP Energy Corp. of the Philippines has begun seeking foreign partners to finance and carry out energy exploration projects in the country, including the search for naturally occurring hydrogen, according to an article reposted in August 2026.
The missing variable is the interval between outlay and first revenue. The USGS, in an outreach text of 13 April 2023 on geologic hydrogen, states that most of the natural hydrogen estimated in its global model is probably inaccessible, due to depth, distance from shore or size of the accumulation.
Exploration of this kind consumes capital in seismic surveys, drilling and licensing over several cycles before any molecule is sold, and the foreign partner comes in to finance this window. Without defining who bears working capital until first revenue, the partnership proposal transfers the cost of the exploration phase to whoever comes in.
Natural hydrogen exploration is decided by the size of the working capital able to bridge the interval until the first sale.
