Crusoe, Araico and the cheap power argument for AI

Crusoe, a US AI infrastructure company, announced on 22 October 2026 a partnership with Paraguay's Araico for a data centre next to the Itaipu substation. The post by Murilo Henrique, of Worklivoo, uses the case to argue that idle capacity becomes a contract. According to Crusoe, the first deployment comes in mid-2027, towards 106 MW of IT, with an option of around 280 MW.

Under the announcement, Araico handles local development and the site, and Crusoe operates the computing capacity. The text gives no energy contract, tariff or term, and Cenário Energia, on 23 October 2026, recorded that these details were not part of the announcement.

Revenue depends on two contracts not yet public: the energy contract, which sets supply cost and term, and the cloud contracts, which pay for the capacity. The thesis of idle capacity turning into revenue is confirmed when both have a duration compatible with the investment.

For Paraguay, the announcement opens a high-value use for its share of Itaipu. The next milestone is the supply contract, which will show price, term and committed volume.
