Maruti Suzuki and the 300 kW electrolyser in Manesar
Maruti Suzuki has commissioned a 300 kW green hydrogen plant at Manesar, in the Indian state of Haryana. According to a post by Girija J, the electrolyser runs on surplus solar generated on site during non-working days, and the hydrogen is blended with natural gas as process fuel.
The project sits on national policy. The Indian government's announcement approving the National Green Hydrogen Mission, dated 4 January 2023, sets an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, production of at least 5 million tonnes a year by 2030 and around 125 GW of additional renewable capacity.
The 300 kW scale shows the logic of the first capital. The carmaker uses its own funds and power that would otherwise be curtailed, which removes the need for an offtake contract and reduces the project to equipment and integration.
A pilot funded by surplus opens the way to the next step, when volume requires dedicated power and a contract. For electrolyser suppliers, the entry point into Indian industry sits at this project size.
