CRRC's hydrogen train prototype
Hydrogen trains in commercial service today run at top speeds around 160 km/h. The post reports images circulating of a CRRC prototype carrying "H2 Hydrogen" markings, linked to a hydrogen-powered high-speed train project.
What is on the record dates from July 2025, when Wang Jian, deputy director of CRRC's new technology research department in Changchun, told reporters that a prototype designed for 250 km/h was expected by the end of that year, with no further specifications disclosed. The two hydrogen models the company has presented, the Chengdu unit and the CINOVA H2, have a top speed of 160 km/h.
Hydrogen rolling stock is today a single-supplier market in each region, with the fuelling chain assembled project by project. LNVG, of Lower Saxony, which opened the world's first commercial hydrogen line, announced on 26 July 2023 the purchase of 102 battery trains from 2029, after a market survey that found battery operation cheaper.
Moving from 160 to 250 km/h widens hydrogen's reach on long non-electrified lines, where battery range runs out. The milestone to watch is an official CRRC announcement with specifications, route and test schedule.
