Geologic hydrogen in Michigan and Professional Paper 1900
The Michigan Infrastructure Office announced USD 7.5 million, through the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund, for exploration, research and development of geologic hydrogen. The 20 August 2026 release covers subsurface mapping, drilling test wells to verify whether hydrogen is present in meaningful quantities, and reserves part of the money as state matching capital for federal funding rounds.
The U.S. Geological Survey published Professional Paper 1900 on 16 January 2025, the country's first geologic hydrogen prospectivity map. It points to high prospectivity in the midcontinent, where Michigan sits, and records that exploration remains at an early stage and that high-concentration accumulations are still rare.
The size of the outlay matters less than the stage it covers: the one that answers whether the resource exists. The same state fund reports having invested USD 200.5 million and leveraged USD 1.025 billion in federal funds, a ratio above 5 to 1.
The milestone to watch is not the announcement, it is what the wells return. According to the release, the state expects the resource to lower energy costs and support industrial decarbonisation. Until drilling answers, what Michigan bought is a head start on an asset class that is not yet proven.
