Green ammonia in Namibia and the Ammonia Energy Association map

Namibia's 40 MW green ammonia project has secured up to 3.6 million dollars. The facility is designed to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of green ammonia and 80,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate a year, with 60 MW of solar, 10 MW of wind and a 65 MWh battery system powering 40 MW of electrolysis.

The amount corresponds to the development stage, not construction. The Namibian pattern helps put it in scale: according to the Ammonia Energy Association, on January 13, 2026, the African Development Bank allocated 10 million dollars to Hyphen for engineering studies, and the SDG Namibia One fund committed up to 5.15 million to Zhero's Walvis Bay project for development and feasibility work ahead of the final investment decision, with commercial operation expected in 2030.

Development capital serves a concrete purpose: it funds studies, permitting and engineering up to the point where a construction investor can price the risk. Smaller scale works in favour here, because 40 MW of electrolysis needs a fraction of the capital and time of a gigawatt project, and the end product is fertiliser, with a buyer closer to home than export ammonia.

The next milestone is the final investment decision, which will show how much of the 20,000 annual tonnes leaves the drawing board.
