Tidal stream turbines and the USD 0.58 billion guide
Tidal current energy has moved out of the laboratory into pre-commercial farms, still far from solar or wind scale. Sayli Deshmukh circulated a PDF guide on underwater turbines estimating the market at USD 0.58 billion in 2025 and USD 0.97 billion by 2036, growing 4.5% a year from 2026 to 2036.
The stage the sector is at comes from an independent source. Ocean Energy Europe reported on 14 September 2026 that the European pipeline holds around 200 devices and 196 MW to 2030 across 16 publicly funded farms, of which 172 MW sit in 11 pre-commercial tidal farms, and that the sector drew 150 million euros of private investment over five years.
A pre-commercial farm with public support means a long gap between outlay and first revenue. Private capital comes in after performance at sea is demonstrated, which is why 196 MW to 2030 sits alongside market projections in the billions of dollars.
For suppliers and investors, the milestone to watch is those farms entering operation. That is what turns a pipeline into a production curve and sets when the sector stops needing a grant to finance each unit.
