ERAG and automatic solar curtailment

Until now, excess generation in the SIN was handled by curtailing centralised generation and by the emergency surplus plan at Type III plants. An opinion article published by Canal Solar on 21 August 2026 discusses ERAG, the Regional Generation Relief Scheme announced by ONS, which extends automatic curtailment to remote mini-generation.

The missing variable is the mechanism's regulatory timeline. CNN Brasil, on 20 August 2026, reports that ONS planning director Alexandre Zucarato described a design of 3 GW divided into three stages of 1 GW, with a workshop with distribution companies in September and a pilot at one distribution company still in 2026, an entirely operational timetable.

For the remote mini-generation investor this is unpriced exposure. Financing, land lease and insurance were sized on a generation curve that now carries an undefined availability reducer, and the effect reaches revenue before any compensation rule exists.

ERAG will be defined by the regulatory instrument that sets the triggering criterion and the economic treatment of curtailment.
