Agribusiness bioenergy reaches 29.8% of domestic supply
In 1970, agribusiness bioenergy was 9.7% of Brazil's domestic energy supply. In 2025, it reached 29.8%, according to a study by the FGV Bioeconomy Observatory reported by Canal Solar, accounting for around 60% of the renewable energy supplied in the country. The study also records that 73% of the energy consumed by farming and livestock in 2022 was fossil, mainly diesel.
A statutory timetable already applies to that diesel. Law 14,993 of 8 October 2024 set the mandatory biodiesel blend at 15% from March 2025, with one additional percentage point per year up to 20% in 2030. CNPE assesses feasibility and may set the percentage between 13% and 25%.
Agribusiness supplies the vegetable oil for biodiesel and consumes the blended diesel in its machinery and freight. Each annual step increases demand for feedstock and replaces part of the fossil fuel in the sector's own consumption.
The law provides for 17% in March 2027, subject to CNPE's assessment. For producers and cooperatives, it is a concrete deadline for planning oil contracts and fleet adaptation.
