Energy Transition Index 2026: only 24% of countries advanced on all three fronts

The World Economic Forum's Energy Transition Index 2026 benchmarks 120 countries. In the video, Roberto Bocca reads it region by region: the Nordics ahead, China as Asia's strongest performer, India standing out for preparedness, the UAE leading over the long term and Sub-Saharan Africa gaining momentum.

The report, dated 18 June 2026, qualifies that progress. Only 24% of countries improved simultaneously across security, affordability and sustainability. The enablers fell back: finance and investment 1.8%, regulation and political commitment 1.2%, innovation 1.1%. And more than 2,500 GW of projects await grid connection.

A ranking measures a country. A project is energised at a connection point. The developer picks the substation, the schedule and the contract, not the national indicator. And 75% of clean energy investment still goes to a few economies.

There is room to work with what is under control: verified connection timing before the site decision, delay responsibility in the contract, disbursement tied to build milestones. The country is not a choice. The connection point is.
