Market stalls under photovoltaic structures
The Energy Shift proposes covering market stalls with solar structures: shade by day and, with a battery, LED lighting, fans and phone charging after dark. This is the author's thesis, presented as a concept.
GOGLA, the global off-grid solar association, provides the service-life picture in its 2026 white paper Solar Generators: The Rise, Role and Revenue Potential: a solar generator lasting 20 years or more, a 100 Wp panel at 25 to 30 years, upfront cost 2.6 times that of a fuel generator, and a 24-month warranty.
The timelines do not match, and that is where residual value is settled. Structure and module last two decades; the battery, far less, and the warranty ends in year 2. With no one accountable for replacement between year 3 and year 20, what remains is shade with a panel and no power at night.
GOGLA records more than 82,000 systems sold by PAYGo companies in two years, mostly in Nigeria: a recurring-payment model capable of carrying replacement already exists. The covered stall pays off when the battery is contracted as a service with scheduled replacement, not as a one-off purchase.
