Renewable hydrogen in China: more than half of the world total
The post argues that China already has a hydrogen economy and that the transition is about restructuring it: more than 51 million tonnes of annual capacity and more than 39 million of actual output, against just above 250,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen in operation, and more than 33 million already consumed by methanol, ammonia, refining and coal chemicals.
The China Hydrogen Energy Development Report (2026), of 11 August under NEA and NDRC guidance, confirms that order of magnitude: operational renewable hydrogen capacity above 250,000 tonnes per year at the end of 2025, double the previous year and over half the world total. It also records 700,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia and 380,000 of green methanol in operation.
That points to where the first capital goes: into the derivatives, not into hydrogen as a final product. Ammonia and methanol have an identified industrial buyer, and that is what supports financing.
Replacing grey hydrogen in an existing chain is the route with proven demand, and the contracted volume of derivative sets how much electrolysis gets financed.
